As we begin a new month, we want to highlight the core values of who we are as a creative agency. February is a month of Black History, and though this history should be celebrated every day of the year for those who support the succession of black excellence and Black lives. Let’s focus our attention for the first week of Black History month on some of the inventors in history that have profoundly made an impact on our daily lives. Though there are many to choose from we highlight a software engineer, an entrepreneur, and an innovative researcher. 

Lisa Gelobter, a graduate of Brown University class of 1991, is best known for her software engineering, she is a computer scientist that contributed to developing animated GIF’s and Shockwave technology. She is a waymaker, who helped pave the wave for online video; a trailblazer for internet animation she is deeply rooted in a lot of our interactions on the web, social media, and within technology simply from her groundworks. When we think of creating animated shorts, logos, and apps we must thank her subconsciously for some of the work we’ve come across.

Madam C. J Walker, famously known as being a philanthropist and political as well as social activist she was also an entrepreneur. A staple in the entrepreneurial business of supply-and-demand for the African American community. She began making hair products for herself after personal hair-loss and became the first female self-made millionaire in American History, more importantly in Black History. Though we emphasize everything she is known for, she is mostly recognized for Madam C.J Walker Manufacturing Company and the hair and beauty product lines she was pioneering for her community. Scholarships were also provided to aid in the opportunities for other Black women to gain accessibility to higher-educational learning.

Patricia Bath, was an ophthalmologist known for her innovation and research as a laser scientist. As the first African American woman physician to receive a patent for a medical invention, she changed the trajectory for those with cataracts and impaired vision when she invented the laserphaco device. Changing the face of medical history, along with paving a path for those to continue to impart their curiosities into developing new, elaborate ways to restore sight.

One thing we can learn from those around us, especially those who came before us is that they had a sight to improve their communities and develop a world that benefited more than themselves. As Patricia Bath once stated, “The ability to restore sight is the ultimate reward”; we can use this phrase to ignite an everlasting chain of events, utilizing the abilities you have to make the lives around you better. Black History Month is to be celebrated every day of the year, as we respect those who came before us by continuous innovation and never giving up.
